“Children are the most precious treasure a community can possess, for in them are the promise and guarantee of the future. They bear the seeds of the character of future society which is largely shaped by what the adults constituting the community do or fail to do with respect to children.” The Universal House of Justice of the Baha’is of the World, 2000.
I love this quote! It has inspired some of the best learning experiences with my children.
I often wonder what the future holds in store for my two precious children. When my son was very young, one of the best pieces of advice I got from another mother during one of my “this kid is driving me crazy!” moments, was the following: “You are not raising a two- year old, you are raising a human being.” That statement, along with this quote, have often guided my responses to my children.
Do we truly SEE our children’s potential or are we so busy making it through each day that we sometimes forget to reflect on their potential? Our children are the future inventors, designers, artists, musicians, leaders, activists, or whatever they choose to become. Might Einstein’s teacher have treated him differently had she glimpsed into his future? Our children will shape the future, and we hope they shape it for the better.
Today my children are 10 and 13 years old, and every year brings with it different joys and challenges to experience together. My daily prayer is that I continue to guide and provide them with the spiritual tools necessary to navigate this world, and God willing, realize their potential to make their unique mark in the world.
What are some of your child’s unique qualities? When you picture your child’s future self, what comes to mind?
